Dear Jodi, Letter to the Editor: Flight Paths. (Longer version) 4.6.17
I fully support Norman Lymer’s(1 June) concerns about the flight paths of helicopters, including the sensible suggestion that one solution would be to vary these flight paths every so often, so that an affected area can get relief, while another has a turn at suffering these problems.
Where I live we have innumerable flights of these ear-pounding aircraft every day, but especially weekdays. However, I believe that the flight paths of all aircraft over residential areas need to be varied from time to time, because we also have international aircraft passing overhead, using the “short” route to Auckland International Airport.
During the last decade, some of us on the North Shore City Council strongly opposed the “Mayorport” proposal to make Whenuapai an international airport (promoted by former Mayors Harvey, Wood, Webster and Gair.)
Mr Russell Stewart quickly set up an organisation called the Whenuapai Airport Action Group (WAAG) which built a very extensive supporter base..
This Group, along with some others, did a lot of research on the problems relating to regular overflying by any aircraft. These relate to all aspects of health such as air pollution, soil pollution, and water pollution. In other words, a major problem.
I hope that most of the people who supported WAAG, plus many more, will either establish a new organisation to oppose the current commercial flight paths across North Shore, and/or support an organisation set up in Morningside pushing for periodic changes in the flight paths.
